You actually do need to click on the radar icon to toggle it on and off (yellow/orange is on, gray is off). While it is on, if there is something on a planet that you need to investigate, it will send out a beam of white rings that make a pinging noise (in addition to the green rings that the radar sends out). The pinging will get faster and higher pitched as you get closer to the object. Also, pay attention to which way the white beam of rings is moving because that tells you the direction to go. If the beam leans to the left, then you need to move your spacecraft to the left until you line up with the beam. If it leans to the right, go right. As you get closer to your target, slow down because the radar will actually use the white beam as a spotlight to lock onto the object when you get near it.
The radar is also useful in locating diseased animals and finding bags of money after an attack or raid, so get used to using it as quickly as possible because you will be using it a lot during the space portion of the game.

Fly around the planet a few times. It's a passive radar system, so clicking on it won't help. It will tell you if you're close.
