Well, cheating is not the answer.
Without money, the best bet is to play nice. This is a recurring "strategy" in the game , that's very Zen/Stoic. Go to one of their worlds, even if they won't trade with you they may let you perform a mission for them.
Secondly, Although I said cheating is not the answer, I will say this, the game was a WHOLE lot more playable when I made some "corrections" to my configuration files, regarding the frequency with which pirates/The Grox or other events occur.
In fact, I will make the argument that the key to the game is learning how - not - to fight. - Certainly you can win by conquest, but this is MUCH more difficult. I've made it to the core and back and even have come as close as one can to allying with the Grox themselves without adversely affecting other interests.
Otherwise, I recommend forming alliances with like-minded species, and TRADE, TRADE, TRADE. I managed to get to space as a scientist and have lost count of how many worlds I've terraformed and how many species I've customized or created and uplifted.
Your best bet - at least initially is to roll over and play nice, to the extent that's possible.
It's ruinously expensive, somewhat humiliating but allows you to expand your interests.
I had a troublesome "frenemy" empire, and far far into the game, I basically uplifted a species that was (by virtue of being a carnivore) stood a good chance of being a militarist race, I allied with them, asked them to go to war against my old adversary, paid them a huge sum of money , broke the alliance and left, after going elsewhere (I was off uplifting worlds through a wormhole) they reduced each other's empires to just 4 worlds between them out of 20, I had another friendly uplift in the area that colonized their worlds as they lost them, but they never could quite wipe each other out in the process.

Also, I cannot strongly enough suggesting that you SAVE your game, if you are going to take a MAJOR action - be it - first contact with the Grox or a larger new empire and you aren't prepared for any and all consequences, - SAVE your game.

As I said, while I do not consider this a cheat so much as a patch that makes the game better than it was delivered and REALLY should have been included in the original release.

have you tried the money cheat ? you can have a lot of money in order to buy terraform kits tt bring the your planets to t3 then populate it with plants and animals build colonies and improve your defenses on those colonies, after wards you can put a turret on your planet (you can have only one on each planet). That way you can have your planets protected against any threat i did so and by now i have 50 planets and i don't need the money code anymore at this point hope that helped
also please try this game also http://bepantera.mybrute.comHow do I survive in space stage of Spore?
Cheating or running away
Hey you don't need to cheat! I managed, I've got like 200 planets and I've never ever cheated! Just build up a bit of money through spice trading between allied planets and your own planets, by getting allies you can also pay them to attack your enemies until bit by bit you've completely gotten rid of them.
Good luck! How do I survive in space stage of Spore?
Try to spend money on your turrets and defenses. If your planets are T0, then try to terraform them so that you can build turrets. Also, pay your allies to attack the enemies (in the "diplomacy" screen). Your allied attacks will confuse and slow the zealots. When you pay your allies, then they will go in with greater force than just giving you a single allied ship. Once your defenses are up, and attacks are down, try to save up money (through trade routes and factories) until you have enough money to bribe the zealots and end the war. At that point, do everything you can to ally them and make new trade routes. Keep building up money and buy out their planets until those empires are gone. At that point, you should have enough money and achievements to buy some good colonizing and weapon tools. Once that happens, go on a conquering and colonizing spree!
If you have no good weapons, then wait. But always remember, money is the most important thing.
